Easy as 1-2-3 Crayon Roll

When I first saw these 'Traveling Crayons' on Michelle's blog, I knew I'd be making them. It seemed a frugal gift, all the while practical. And I like practical. It was a year before I got down to it. I was trying to find a cute and yet unique gift for my nephews, Chase and Owen. At this time, my neices were going to be going on a road trip to see them, so I was preparing for them to take it. Then I realized, this is perfect for two little girls on a road trip too. How many crayons have fallen, unnoticed, during a pit stop? This is a great way to contain them. This was the time to make one for each of them.

This gift is practical, frugal, easy, and adorable. How could I not make them?

Thanks to Michelle for posting 'Traveling Crayons' on her blog and then having the tutorial at Skip to my Lou, here are some further suggestions:

  • Personalize each roll with fabric specific to the child. This was so fun! I went to the fabric store and just went back and forth, picking materials, mixing and matching, personalizing. Enjoy the journey.

  • Consider a sew-on or no-sew valcro strip for the inner and outer edges of the roll. I have not tried this but will be trying it for Daryn's crayon roll. The idea would be to valcro shut the roll versus the ribbon. I suggest this for the ease of the child and possibly more durability.

  • I chose a variety of ribbon for the kids, to match each pattern. Buy quality ribbon and make certain it is not going to unravel at the end. I happen to have experience.

I hope you enjoy the project and gift of 'Traveling Crayons'. Leave a comment and picture if you have any suggestions or 'finished work'. I would love to see your work and personal touches.
